Funeral arrangements whether it be a burial service or a cremation service, cannot be completed until a death certificate has been issued by the relevant authorities. If the death has occurred in a medical facility, then a death certificate will be issued by the attending staff. If the death is unexpected or does not occur in a medical facility, an ambulance or physician must be called so that a qualified physician can issue a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death.

There may be certain circumstances in which an autopsy is required to be performed, for example if the death is unexpected or occurs during a surgical procedure. The body will be held by the Office of the State Coroner until the cause of death has been indentified and the death certificate issued.
